Sturgeon Spearing * Ice Fishing on Lake Winnebago
Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
Media Event Purpose:
Highlight stories from the sturgeon spearing and the rich history that surrounds this annual activity held on Lake Winnebago during the opening weekend in February. Outdoor communicators have this pursuit of the pre-historic bottom feeder fish on their bucket list. They will capture the essence of the traditional activities by participating in many aspects of the spearing both pre- and post-event as well as ice fishing. In addition, they will experience another annual outdoor festival held on Lake Winnebago, the Sturgeon Stampede Festival (ice kiting event, windsurfers, free skate short board of ice sailing). I’ve encountered small prehistoric fish. Last year, fishing on the White River at Gaston’s White River Resort, I hooked the ugliest fish I’d ever seen on a hunk of frozen shrimp. Somehow, what I later found out was called a sculpin, snuck past a rainbow, darted off the bottom, and ate this little saltwater morsel.
- This tiny prehistoric fish, a sculpin, was caught at Gaston’s White River Resort in Lakeview, Arkansas.
Fast-forward almost a year later, and stalking another pre-historic fish is on my agenda. This time, it won’t be the random happenstance of a bizarre fish taking my bait, rather, I’m the predator and my quarry is the hallowed Winnebago lake sturgeon. I’m very fortunate to be invited on the Women of Winnebago media event sponsored by the Fond du Lac Convention and Visitors Bureau and Plano Molding and Frabill. This is my first sturgeon spearing adventure. Continue reading

A pan fisherman at heart, I love the fight of big bass, beautiful walleye, and redfish. I have never focused on many other species until the past couple of years. Often asked about my bucket list, I receive surprised looks when I’d shrug my shoulders and say I didn’t really have one. Finally after listening to the fish tales of my friends and coworkers, I started putting together my own list and I have to admit, it does make the sport a little more exciting and trip planning a little more fun. I now strategize on what fish types of fish I can catch and what types of bait and gear I should use to lure them in. In 2012, I knocked several species off of my bucket list. It was a year of a 20lb king salmon, an 8lb brown trout, my first yellow perch, 6lb northern pike, sheephead, black drum and even a sculpin, which is a pretty tiny fish. Even after I caught the “bucket list bug,” I remained an open water angler and didn’t step foot on a frozen lake until late December. After which, I’ve made a separate ice fishing bucket list.
