WOW – Women on Winnebago – Feb 6-9, 2014
Sturgeon Spearing * Ice Fishing on Lake Winnebago
Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
Media Event Purpose:
Highlight stories from the sturgeon spearing and the rich history that surrounds this annual activity held on Lake Winnebago during the opening weekend in February. Outdoor communicators have this pursuit of the pre-historic bottom feeder fish on their bucket list. They will capture the essence of the traditional activities by participating in many aspects of the spearing both pre- and post-event as well as ice fishing. In addition, they will experience another annual outdoor festival held on Lake Winnebago, the Sturgeon Stampede Festival (ice kiting event, windsurfers, free skate short board of ice sailing). For two years now, I’ve spent a weekend in February staring down an ice
hole the size of a big-screen television seeking to spear a sturgeon.
It’s a lot like trying to shoot ducks through a chimney. Continue reading
Big fish on tap for season
OSHKOSH – The deadline to buy sturgeon spearing licenses for the 2014 Lake Winnebago System seasons is Oct. 31, with the seasons shaping up to provide ample opportunity to land the fish of a lifetime as well as enjoy a tradition that brings together family and friends.
“We have been seeing a record number of big fish in the harvest over the last decade and expect more of the same for the 2014 seasons,” says Ryan Koenigs, Department of Natural Resources Winnebago System sturgeon biologist. “Nine of the top 10 fish on record have been harvested since 2004 and a record high 9.5 percent of the fish harvested last year exceeded 100 pounds.” Continue reading
“All that visit the Fond du Lac area will be warmly welcomed to a convenient Lake Winnebago destination with a versatile, affordable experience.”
Serving as the base hub for the largest inland lake in Wisconsin, Fond du Lac undoubtedly offers the outdoorsman a wide variety of recreational opportunities.
Last fall the Fond du Lac Area Visitor’s Bureau rebranded itself, and has been making headlines in the outdoor industry. Due to the efforts of the handful of employees at the Visitor’s Bureau, it has become a hotspot for the outdoor communicator looking for the next great story. Continue reading

I’ve encountered small prehistoric fish. Last year, fishing on the White River at Gaston’s White River Resort, I hooked the ugliest fish I’d ever seen on a hunk of frozen shrimp. Somehow, what I later found out was called a sculpin, snuck past a rainbow, darted off the bottom, and ate this little saltwater morsel.
- This tiny prehistoric fish, a sculpin, was caught at Gaston’s White River Resort in Lakeview, Arkansas.
Fast-forward almost a year later, and stalking another pre-historic fish is on my agenda. This time, it won’t be the random happenstance of a bizarre fish taking my bait, rather, I’m the predator and my quarry is the hallowed Winnebago lake sturgeon. I’m very fortunate to be invited on the Women of Winnebago media event sponsored by the Fond du Lac Convention and Visitors Bureau and Plano Molding and Frabill. This is my first sturgeon spearing adventure. Continue reading
